Last week, we began 3rd grade music class with a movement game. I play rhythms on the conga drum, and students are required to put my drum beat into their feet. The beat will change from slower beats to faster beats, and they need to match my beat. When the drum stops, students freeze and listen for the number cue. How many times do I play the drum...2, 3, 4, or 5 times. Once they determine the number, they must quietly put themselves into groups of that number. The goal is to create a statue with that group of people. Once students were used to this procedure, I gave them the name of their "Statue" they had to create! Once they were in "freeze mode," I got to walk thru the museum, which was a blast!! Here are a few examples:

So my 5th graders and I are tracing the music history line that leads us to the development of jazz music of the early 20th century. One of our "stops" this week led us to the discussion of blues music and the 12 bar blues form. This is an ARTS Integration collaboration between music and the 5th grade classroom teachers. Therefore, 5th graders are writing their own blues lyrics. There are some that are HILARIOUS, such as: Title--the Chips Blues Why are there only little bits of chips? Why are there only little bits of chips? Don't have nothin to grab hold of that Dip! Other titles included: "Number Talks Blues" "Lost Chicken Nugget" "I Dropped My Hot Pocket" On a more serious note, I also received this example: Title: We Are Immigrants We are immigrants, trying to make our way. We are immigrants, trying to make our way. Just wish people would notice what we do and what we say. |
